Breaking Boy News is an ongoing art project, which explores the concept of “degenerate art” by using artistic expressions that are considered “degenerate” today.
The project started in Berlin in 2011 and consists of a tabloid newspaper, a full-color magazine and a website with daily updates.
The news stories are real; every post ends with a link to the source. In addition, the stories are illustrated with a factually unrelated photo.
The curating follows one major rule: The boy in the news must be active, no matter if he’s a perpetrator or a hero. There are no posts where the boy himself is the victim.
Other artists have included references to Breaking Boy News in their works. Here is a contribution by photographer Henry Lorca:
Reactions to Breaking Boy News are collected and compared to the reactions that the original degenerate art – “Entartete Kunst” – faced in Nazi Germany. The results will be described in detail in an upcoming summary of the project.
