A 16-year-old boy, who started abusing alcohol at the age of seven, had to be restrained in court today as he shouted abuse at a judge when he was refused bail over a mugging in Dublin.

The teenager appeared at the Dublin Children’s Court accused of robbery of a mobile phone from a man at the Ha’penny Bridge, on November 21 last.

Judge Ann Ryan had heard it the victim had been crossing the bridge when it is alleged that teenager and another male approached. The teen is alleged to have stolen a phone from the victim who gave chase.

He was then knocked to the ground and got kicked. Judge Ryan heard the man suffered “a swollen nose and a cut to his eye.”

Defence solicitor Gareth Noble had asked Judge Ryan to accept jurisdiction to deal with the case in the juvenile court. He said the boy intended to plead guilty and has had an alcohol problem for several years.

“Social worker reports indicate it first came to attention of his school where they located a bottle of vodka in his school bag at the age of seven,” the defence lawyer had said.

Judge Ryan made an order sending the teenager forward for trial at which the youngster’s father begged the judge to grant bail to him.

However, the judge refused at which point the boy suddenly stood up and began shouting. He called the judge “a mug” and screamed “F**k you, f**k the bail”.

A 15-year-old boy who helped carry out an act of vandalism at a DART station has been sentenced to 12 months’ probation.

The boy pleaded guilty yesterday at the Children’s Court to criminally damaging a window at Harmonstown DART station last February.

Judge Ann Ryan heard that the boy helped cause about €500 worth of damages when he swung a bike at a window at the station.

A troubled 14-year-old boy who was arrested with a knife close to a south Dublin primary school has been released from garda custody and won’t face charges.

The boy was taken into custody after the terrifying incident near the Dalkey Project National School in Glenageary shortly after 8.30am yesterday and received medical attention.

A source told the Herald: “That is the end of the matter – thankfully no one was injured.”

Dozens of primary school children witnessed the incident when they were being dropped off at the school yesterday morning.

The boy – who was armed with a knife – was confronted by a number of parents armed with hockey sticks before gardai rushed to the scene.

“He was running around, not really going for anyone, but not staying still either. People didn’t know what would happen next,” a woman said.

“In the end some parents tackled him and took the knife from him, and he got very emotional. It was very disturbing.”

The youth has no connection with the school.
