A teenager who tried to rape a university student during a late night attack in a park in the centre of Gloucester has been sent to a psychiatric hospital indefinitely.
The 17-year-old hit the 19-year-old woman repeatedly over the head with a wine bottle and held a broken pair of scissors to her throat as he tried to rape her.
As he carried out the assault on the evening of June 12 last year the victim was able to call her friend to try to alert her to the attack.
The victim was walking home across Gloucester Park having been out celebrating her friend’s birthday when the defendant pounced on her at around 10.45pm.
She suffered serious cuts to her head, which required staples, and suffered bruising and scratches all over her body – and has been left devastated by her ordeal.
The teenager, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to charges of attempted rape and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Two psychiatrists agreed he was mentally ill. He will be on the sex offenders register for life.

A Casey Middle School art teacher is resigning after admitting she kissed a 13-year-old boy on the mouth.
Donna Sleap pleaded guilty in court on Thursday to endangering the welfare of a child. Staff members alerted administrators about her behavior in October, and the art teacher was placed on leave in December. The incident was reportedly caught on video.
As part of her guilty plea, the teacher will have to surrender her teaching license and will not be able to re-apply.
The Assistant District Attorney said in court, had this gone to a jury trial, she believed there would have been enough evidence to convict Sleap of second- or third-degree sexual abuse.
She will be sentenced on July 30 and faces up to one year in jail.
